Radius clause

A promise not to play another show within a set distance and time of the booked one.

Glossary

A radius clause protects the promoter's ticket sales. If the same artist plays 40 km away three weeks earlier, the second show sells worse.

How it is written

Two numbers and a point on the map. For example: no public performance within 150 km of the venue, from 60 days before the show until 30 days after.

Typical ranges

  • Club shows: 50 to 100 km, four to eight weeks either side
  • National tours: the whole country, for the length of the tour
  • Major festivals: 250 to 400 km, with windows that can run from January to September

What to check

Ask what counts as a performance. Some clauses catch private shows, radio sessions and sets played under another name. Get exceptions in writing rather than assuming a festival will be relaxed about it later. A clause that blocks a whole summer is worth pricing into the fee. See Exclusivity.

Free for artists.

One place to keep your artist's facts, intro, bio, photos, riders and contacts up to date. Change it once and every promoter opens the newest version. Yours at tap.fm/yourname.
