A residency swaps one-off bookings for a standing date. The club gets a name it can market month after month, and the artist gets a room to build something in.
How it works
The venue books the same artist weekly, monthly or seasonally, often for a run of six to twelve dates. Ibiza's summer club nights are the best-known version, but residencies run all year in city clubs from Berlin to Amsterdam, and in jazz venues where a house band holds a fixed night.
What is in the deal
- The number of dates and the period they run over.
- A fee per night, usually lower than a one-off, traded for the certainty.
- A radius clause, so the artist does not play a competing room nearby during the run.
- Who books the support or the rest of the line-up.
What it is good for
A residency lets a DJ test records in front of the same crowd, and lets a band play a new set until it works. It also gives a promoter something to sell as a series rather than as an evening, which is easier to build an audience around.
