Verification answers one question: is this account run by the people it claims to be. It says nothing about whether the music is good or the information accurate. It says someone checked the identity behind the name.
How platforms do it
Approaches differ. Some check a government ID against a selfie. Some ask for documents from a label, a distributor or a management company. Some sell a subscription that comes with a badge and check close to nothing, which is why the badge means less on some platforms than on others.
Why artists want it
- The name is protected against impersonation.
- Search puts the real account above the fan pages.
- Promoters and journalists know which account to write to.
- Some platform features open only to verified accounts.
What to watch
A badge is worth exactly as much as the check behind it, and a reader cannot see that check. Ask what was verified: a person's identity, the ownership of a stage name, or a paid subscription. Those are three different things.
