Artist is the word the live trade reaches for when the thing on stage might be one person or nine. A promoter books an artist, a contract names an artist, a poster bills an artist, whatever its internal shape.
Why one word
The paperwork does not change. The fee, the rider, the set time and the guest list work the same whether the name belongs to a band or a DJ. One word keeps a booking system, a contract template and a festival programme from needing a separate case for every shape.
What it covers
- A solo artist performing under their own name.
- A DJ under an alias.
- A band with a fixed line-up.
- A duo, a live electronic project, a collective with a rotating cast.
- A one-off pairing booked as a back-to-back or a special.
Where it gets complicated
The artist is the billing entity, not the legal one. Behind one name there may be a company, several self-employed musicians and a manager. Money and liability follow those, so contracts name both.
