Versus deal

A deal where the artist gets either the guarantee or a percentage of the door, whichever is higher.

Glossary

The versus deal is the common structure for headline club shows in Europe. It gives the artist a floor and a share of the upside.

How it reads

Written as something like 4.000 euro versus 80 percent of net receipts. At settlement both numbers get worked out and the artist takes the larger one. The percentage is not paid on top of the guarantee.

A worked example

  • Guarantee: 4.000 euro
  • Tickets sold: 700 at 22 euro, so 15.400 euro gross
  • After VAT and ticketing fees, say 12.000 euro net
  • 80 percent of that is 9.600 euro, so the artist is paid 9.600 euro

Had 250 tickets sold, the percentage would land under the guarantee and the artist would still be paid 4.000 euro.

What to check

Which number the percentage applies to. Gross and net can differ by 25 percent once VAT and fees come out. See Net receipts.
